FAQ
Frequently asked questions
You can use either an acoustic piano or a digital piano.
Acoustic Pianos:
• An acoustic piano will need to be tuned. This is about $100-$150
• You can often get very inexpensive used pianos - sometimes free! It will often cost around $300 to move an acoustic piano though, so consider this and tuning into the price.
Digital Pianos:
• These range widely in price, but can a quality piano can be purchased for about $500
• Digital pianos don't need to be tuned and can be transported more easily
• Digital pianos can use headphones so they can work better for late hours or apartments
For kids, a great age to start is around 7 years old, or when a kid has a bit of knowledge of reading and writing. This knowledge, and being slightly older, can make it easier to learn written music concepts. Kids as young as 4 can also start but will need different pacing and parental involvement in the lesson.
Being older generally makes it easier to learn piano, and this includes adults. Though the media often focuses on rare and unusual child prodigies or talks about unique abilities of the very young to soak up information like a sponge, most of the time, being older is very helpful for learning piano and music generally. Adults learn very well and have more knowledge and discipline than younger people. You can easily start at 50 or 70 years old and become and excellent musician with zero prior knowledge.
